Memorable Moments in an Alien World

{November 4, 2011}   The Power of the Hand

So as the past few months have rushed by at what feels is a break-neck speed, I never cease to be fascinated by the life, color, attitude, noise and culture of the city around me.

Amongst many other things, I’ve noticed something quite interesting as it relates to pedestrians in LA. There seems to be a peculiar power that pedestrians feel they yield in the Santa Monica/West LA region. Now, I know everyone has seen really obnoxious, self-absorbed pedestrians. Heck, I think at one point or another, we have all been THAT pedestrian, acting as though we truly are center of the universe and all others should bow and get out of our way lest we be late for our super-important __(fill in the blank)__!

What I’ve noticed is something altogether separate (if you picked up on the reference, it just means you’re especially awesome). Daily I see pedestrians step out onto the street and as cars come, they simply hold a hand up, willing cars to stop. It seems as though in this alien land, pedestrians are impervious to any harm a car may do because they hold the power of the hand.

I must confess, so far that power works quite effectively (though it grows more obtrusively annoying by the moment).
